Winter 2013-14

Rudolph Buchbinder, world renowned classical pianist, came to Dubway to connect with a dozen radio stations for interviews about his forthcoming Mozart recording on forte piano.

Dubway’s production audio teamed up with PBS station WGBH for a film recording of famed lyric soprano Renée Fleming - in a Fifth Avenue apartment, accompanied by a quartet of guitar, cello, violin, and piano. The shoot will air as part of longtime culinary show, Lydia’s Italy.

World famous classical violinist, Joshua Bell was interviewing with radio stations across the country from the Dubway’s Blue Control Room, announcing his conductorship of Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, as well as his new album of Beethoven Symphonies No. 4 & 7, with the same orchestra.

Eric Hutchinson performed at the City Winery, and Dubway’s remote recording team was on hand to multitrack the live show, and subsequently mix it, complete with all the live show banter that endears Eric to his fans that packed the house.

In one of the more exotic sessions lately, the Mezzanine saw a cavalcade of 50 students of the Natalia Huang Piano School each recording their contribution to a 28-piece Christmas compilation CD.

Super Bowl 2012 - CBS Sports brought the world renowned Rebirth Brass Band into Dubway to impart their New Orleans funk to this year’s Super Bowl. They rendered their own inimitably funky version of the CBS Sports theme, bringing a flavor of the Big Easy to the TV broadcast and pre-game build up. 40 Million listeners!

In December, Dubway Studios hosted a radio broadcast of the syndicated radio show, On Point with Tom Ashcroft. Classical pianist John Davis was interviewed, live on the air, by Tom Ashcroft in Boston’s WBUR, and performed piano compositions by Abe Lincoln’s favorite contemporary American composer, Louis Moreau Gottschalk.

Veteran filmmaker Joe DiGennaro, of JennyWhine Pictures Entertainment, recorded the soundtrack to his latest film. Pianist, percussionist, and violinist were are in separate rooms on Dubway’s Main Floor, cutting tracks live to the film.

Producer/writer Paul Young and engineer Julian Evans spent tracking ADR for upcoming indy film release of the award winning play, “In the Summer Pavilion.”

Linda Purl, television actress (True Blood, Desperate Housewives), cabaret singer, movie and Broadway star, came to Dubway’s Mezzanine to record her new cabaret cd. Lee Lessack, founder of LML Music, and a famous vocalist and recording artist in his own right, produced the sessions.

Dubway's Location Sound Team trailed all over Brooklyn and Manhattan for weeks, tracking two new reality shows for Oxygen (“Brooklyn 11223”) and MTV. These shows will have their network debuts in the spring. Headed up by Dubway’s Chris Abell, the location sound team is garnering rave reviews from the television industry form the directors and producers in the reality TV trenches.

In another location sound mix, the crew worked with Inner Dog Productions shooting audio for renowned kids’ TV content provider, Sesame Workshop.
In the audio post realm, Dubway is currently mixing award-winning filmmaker Joan Grossman’s latest film, "Drop City," which chronicles the evolution of the famed counterculture commune from the ‘60’s in Colorado.

Additionally, Winx Club tapped Evan Lurie (The Backyardigans, Oswald the Octopus) to compose a new song for their Christmas special. Evan brought the song to Dubway, producing it with the help of Dubway’s Keith Rigling.

Dubway’s Chris Abell recorded production audio on location for Ish Entertainment’s production, The June Ambrose Project, as well 6 demanding weeks on a brand new series, to be released shortly.

Michael Simon Hall recorded and edited audio for his Pieces of Paper project, a multimedia meditation on the power of human compassion in action the week of September 11, 2001. Music was composed by internationally acclaimed composer Anton Batagov and was performed by world renowned cellist Matt Haimovitz.. Dubway’s Stephen Schappler and Josh Tucker engineered the project.

In quick succession were two documentaries by Gary NullDeath By Medicine and Knocking On the Devil's Door. Produced by Valerie Vancleve and Richard Gale, the films premier in August at the IFC here in NYC, and in LA.

Knocking on the Devil's Door investigates the nuclear power industry and the politics surrounding radiation and nuclear safety. Taylor Batchelor mixed the audio.

The television producers at ISH Entertainment brought Dubway on to capture the production audio for an event called "Pop Up Chapel" in which 24 same-sex couples got married in Columbus Circle, next to Central Park. Dave Holmes (MTV, Reno 911) MC'ed the event. Josh Tucker of Dubway handled the sound record.

It’s been a busy couple of months over at the Apple Store in Soho with the iTunes Live from Soho series.  Soho was abuzz when The Roots took to the stage with songs from their newest album How I Got Over.  The band played a cover of Guns n Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” that was stadiu- worthy and brought the crowd to their feet.  Also in Soho, British singer-songwriter David Gray captivated fans for 45 minutes with a solo-acoustic set showcasing songs from his new album “Foundling.”  The set also included standards such as “Please Forgive Me,” “This Years Love,” and“Sail Away.”  Other performers on the Live From Soho stage included Kidz in the Hall promoting their new album “Land of Make Believe,” Mexican metal band Moderatto promoting their “Queremos Rock”album, and Latin Grammy-nomanies Nortec Collectivepromoting their “Bostich and Fussible” album.  Franco-Chilean hip-hop songstress Anita Tijoux, formerly of Makiza fame, was also a featured artist onLive from Soho.  Tijouz brought her brand of Sudaca rap to Soho’s Apple Store, as part of the 2010 Latin Alternative Music Conference.  Jason Marcucci tracked the concerts and Mike Judeh assisted. 

Atlanta born rapper B.o.B was the featured artist on MTV Unplugged this month.  The artist performed songs from his recent B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray CD for an enthusiastic audience in Manhattan.  Jason Marcucci recorded the taping and Mike Judeh assisted.

The new film by writer/director Elizabeth Lucas is now out at selected theaters.  “Clear Blue Tuesday” is a pop musical about living in New York City post-9/11 and is receiving rave reviews.  The albums’ soundtrack out on Sh-K-Boom Records was mastered here at Dubway Studios by Engineer/Owner Mike Crehore.

Guests on Live from the Artists Den this month included Grace Potter and The Nocturnals at Bryant Park and 80’s UK pop group Squeeze Ms. Potter is currently on a national tour with her band promoting their self-titled album on Hollywood Records.  In support of their newest release Spot the Difference,Squeeze is touring as well.  The album contains new recordings of Squeeze classics.  Both concerts were recorded by Dubway engineer Mike Judeh and will air later this year on PBS.

Bravo Television’s newest TV show “The Approval Matrix” based on the New York Magazine article of the same name began taping casting sessions for the show this month and Dubway engineer Chris Abell was there to record the audio.  Look for it to begin airing later this year.

The much heralded Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang was in New York City to play a benefit concert for the children of Haiti at Carnegie Hall.  The artist serves as a “UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador” and is raising money to help with relief efforts after the recent devastating earthquake.  Dubway Studios was asked to record a private pre-show performance by Lang Lang in a small New York theater for television & Internet promotional spots to bring attention to the evening fundraiser.  Dubway Chief Engineer Jason Marcucci tracked the performance and Chris Montgomery assisted.

Grammy-nominated R&B artist Trey Songz was the featured guest on MTV Unplugged this month and performed a stripped down set before an intimate studio audience in New York.  The Virginia native showcased a number of the hits from his latest album, Ready, including a mash-up of “I Invented Sex” and Marvin Gaye’s classic “Let’s Get It On.”  Dubway Studios Chief Engineer Jason Marcucci recorded the performance and Mike Judeh assisted.

Dubway kicked off the new year with the legendary Ringo Starr and an episode of Live from the Artist Den. The former Beatle performed a handful of his many hits along with tracks from his new album Y Not, on Hip-O Records/Universal Music. Ben Harper was the opening act and special guest Joan Osborne joined Starr on stage to sing backup vocals on “A Little Help From My Friends.”  The live concert was recorded by Dubway Studio’s staff engineer Mike Judeh.  The show will air later this year on PBS.

Apple’s Live from Soho series for iTunes hosted the brilliant modern-classical-minimalist composer Philip Glass and his Glass Chamber Players.  The concert featured Philip Glass, Wendy Sutter, Tim Fain, and special guest Ira Glass who performed for a packed house in the theater at the Apple Store in Soho.  Dubway’s Chief Engineer Jason Marcucci tracked the concert and Mike Judeh assisted.

Also this month on the Live from Soho stage was the wonderful Corrine Bailey Rae.  Ms. Bailey Raeperformed songs from her new album The Sea and is currently in the midst of a heavy tour schedule promoting the new release on EMI Records.  Jason Marcucci tracked the concert and Mike Judeh assisted.

RCA recording artists The Script were guests this month on the long-running hit show MTV Unplugged.  The band performed songs from their self-titled debut release and is currently on tour.  Another Unplugged guest this month was the headline-grabbing Adam Lambert.  The second-place winner of American Idol is currently on tour promoting his RCA album For Your Entertainment.

The much heralded Chinese classical pianist Lang Lang was in New York City to play a benefit concert for the children of Haiti at Carnegie Hall.  The artist serves as a “UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador” and is raising money to help with relief efforts after the recent devastating earthquake.  Dubway Studios was asked to record a private pre-show performance by Lang Lang in a small New York theater for television & Internet promotional spots to bring attention to the evening fundraiser.  Dubway Chief Engineer Jason Marcucci tracked the performance and Chris Montgomery assisted.

Downtown in Soho on Apple’s Live From Soho stage, Grammy Award-winning Musical Artist Angelique Kidjo performed for a packed house.  The Beninoise singer-songwriter is well-know for her diverse musical influences and activism.  She campaigns for women’s rights in Africa and founded The Batonga Foundation, which gives girls a secondary school and higher education.  Her long list of musical collaborations include Dave Matthews, Bono, Carlos Santana, andPeter Gabriel to name just a few.  Dubway Chief Enginer Jason Marcucci tracked the performance and Mike Judeh assisted. 

Also downtown, songstress VV Brown graced the Live from Soho stage performing songs from her Universal Records release Traveling Like the Light.  Ms. Brown, whose songs have been featured in TV shows such as Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and 90210, played to an enthusiastic crowd and included her hit song “Shark in the Water.”  Jason Marcucci tracked and Mike Judeh assisted from Dubway.

Another MTV Unplugged guest this month, Grammy-winners Phoenix.  The band performed songs from theirWolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album along with songs from 2006’s It’s Never Been Like That including a new take on “Long Distance Call.”  Jason Marcucci tracked the taping and Mike Judeh assisted.

Dubway engineer Mike Judeh stopped byJanet Jackson’s Manhattan apartment to record an interview promoting her new film with Tyler Perry, “Why Did I Get Married Too?.”  Ms. Jackson discussed the film and her upcoming concert tour.

Australian-born pop singer Daniel Merriweather was the featured guest on this month's Live From the Artists Den Merriweather is currently on tour promoting his debut album “Love & War” on RCA/Jive.  The taping took place in front of a small live audience and will air later this year on PBS.  Chris Abell recorded the concert.

Over on the Live From Soho stage for Apple iTunes was the hip-hop duo Reflection Eternal.  The duo are currently touring to promote their new “Revolutions per Minute” release on Warner Brothers Records.  Another duo and guest of the series this month, Nuttin but Stringz.  Juilliard School of Music trained brothers Tourie and Damien Escobar play a unique blend of classical, pop, rock, & hip-hop with strings.
